Sophie B Hawkins' version of 'Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover' is one of my favourite songs of the 1990s. So I approached this update by Australia's criminally underrated Methyl Ethel and the excellent Hatchie with more than a bit of apprehension. Thankfully, my fears were misguided because it's fantastic. They have described it as a 'Frankenstein' single because the vocals and backing were recorded on different sides of the country and combined after the fact. The awkwardness of that method has created something that feels both organic and warm, giving the song a whole new lease of life.
